Matariki Collection
Each piece in the Matariki collection has a special hononga (connection) to one of the nine whetū (stars) of Matariki.
This Pari Pōtete is connected to Tipuānuku.
Matariki holds a unique hononga (bond) with gardens and the crops that flourish in the soil. Tipuānuku, one of its stars, influences the abundance of foods like kūmara, as its name signifies “to grow in the ground.” As Matariki descends in the western sky during May, garden harvests conclude, marking the approach of winter.
This is the meaning of the whakataukī below.
Hauhake tū, ka tō Matariki
Lifting of the crops begins when Matariki sets
Match it with the Tōrire skirt or the Pōtete wrap skirt.
